Is it possible to drive the car without the fob?

Hello! I have this story, guys!
I drove home, parked in the garage, and left my key fob on my workbench while I changed for dinner. I must have forgotten to turn off the car because we got in, drove 5 miles to a restaurant, and only then did I realize that I didn't have the fob! We tore the car apart, but it was nowhere to be found.
Strangely, my car, which is usually picky about fob placement, still let me shift into drive. I checked the trip screen, and it showed the same drive from earlier, still counting. When we got home, sure enough, the fob was still on my workbench. The moment I got back in with it, the trip reset.
Is this normal? A glitch? I always thought the car required a fob after exiting. Any thoughts?

Normally, cars detect when the fob has left the cabin and prevent shifting into drive if it’s missing. The fact that your trip screen still showed the same session makes me think the system never fully reset after you parked. This could be a safety oversight, because technically, someone else could have taken the car while you were away.

It's not supposed to be possible to drive that far without the key fob in the car. It seems like the car messed up maybe thinking the fob was there when you started it and then didn't realize it was gone. The trip screen acting weird too is another sign something went wrong. Cars usually warn you if the fob leaves while you're driving. If it happens again you should get the car checked by the dealer there might be a problem with the keyless system.

That’s a odd! My car definitely won’t let me drive without the fob, so it seems like the system didn’t realize the fob was gone. Maybe it was just a weird glitch, but if it happens again, I’d definitely get it checked out. You don’t want it happening when you least expect it!

If the fob wasn’t in range, the car shouldn’t have let you drive at all. Probably just a glitch or the system messing up with detecting the fob. keep an eye on it, and if it happens again, definitely get it checked out.
